The Ancient Trail – a journey into the past

The Road of the Ancients (Oldtidsruta) is the main road 110 between Fredrikstad and Skjeberg in the Municipality of Sarpsborg. On this road you will find the highest concentration in Norway of ancient monuments from the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages – including burial mounds, stone circles, and fortified hamlets. At the peak of the Bronze Age the priests and rockcarvers of Begby transformed granite slabs into tableaux depicting the journey of the soul to the sun and the stars. The ancient bronzesmiths of Hunn transformed metal ore into ritual swords and axes. No area of Norway has a richer Bronze Age heritage.

A walk in Munch’s footsteps

There are many traces of Edvard Munch’s life story in Fredrikstad. The paternal side of his family can be traced back to Søren Munch, who worked at Isegran. On his mother’s side the Bjølsens were from Kråkerøy and Torsnes. Edvard Munch’s mother, Laura Cathrine Munch, and his aunt, Karen Bjølstad, were born in Storgaten 26. Munch’s parents were married in Glemmen Church and several branches of the Bjølstad family are buried in Old Glemmen Church.
